Detailed Encierro Route Guide
The 875 meter encierro path from Santo Domingo to Plaza de Toros presents unique challenges in each section. Our team of experienced runners have compiled detailed insights for every part of the running of the bulls route to help you understand the complete course.
Distance: 280 meters
Section 1: Santo Domingo
The first and most challenging uphill section of the encierro route. This 280 meter uphill stretch is where the bulls are at their freshest and fastest. The narrow street creates a funnel effect, making it extremely crowded and potentially dangerous. Experienced runners consider this a technically challenging section of the Pamplona bull run route.
Distance: 100 meters
Section 2: Plaza Consistorial (Town Hall Square)
A wider section offering more room to maneuver. After the intensity of Santo Domingo, the route opens up into Plaza Consistorial (Town Hall Square). This 100 meter stretch gives runners more space to position themselves and assess herd movement. The bulls typically maintain their grouping through this section, but nothing is ever certain on the Pamplona run route.
Distance: Short but critical
Section 3: Mercaderes and La Curva de Estafeta
This short but critical section features the most notorious turn on the entire 875 meter encierro path, known as La Curva (never call it "Dead Man's Corner"). This 90-degree right turn from Mercaderes onto Calle Estafeta is where bulls often slip and fall, creating unpredictable and extremely dangerous situations.
Distance: 311 meters
Section 4: Estafeta Street (Calle Estafeta)
The longest and most famous stretch of the running of the bulls route. The bulls typically regain their footing and continue at speed. This section is popular for first-time runners due to its relative predictability and relative straightness.
Distance: Final section
Section 5: Telefónica and the Callejón (Final Stretch)
The final section includes the Telefónica Curve (named after telephone wires that traditionally crisscrossed over this section) and the Callejón—the narrow passage leading into the bullring. This section narrows significantly, creating dangerous bottlenecks as runners rush to enter the arena. Bulls may be tired but remain extremely dangerous, especially if separated from the herd. This area has a history of pile-ups (montones).
