Looking back at 2006, the fastest run of the fiesta belonged to Miura, who covered the course on July 9 in 2 minutes and 13 seconds. I was not yet attending the fiesta in 2006, but as someone who has spent years studying the history of every run, that Miura morning occupies a particular place in the record.
The 2006 lineup included Cebada Gago and Fuente Ymbro, two ranches I have come to know well in the years since, alongside Marqués de Domecq, Dolores Aguirre, Miura, José Luis Osborne, Alcurrucén and Victorino Martín.

The fastest run of the 2006 fiesta came on July 9, when the Miura herd completed the 848.6-meter course in 2 minutes and 13 seconds in a fast, crowded encierro. It was not an all-time record: Miura itself would run the course in 2:05 on July 14, 2015.
The 2006 fiesta also marked the second year of Fuente Ymbro’s participation in Pamplona; the ranch had debuted in 2005. Cebada Gago, against their dangerous reputation, ran a fast, clean encierro on July 10, and Victorino Martín closed the fiesta with a very fast, clean run in 2:21. Marqués de Domecq opened the 2006 fiesta on July 7, a run that left seven runners hurt, one of them very seriously. The ranch would run again in Pamplona on July 12, 2007.

A Ranch Finding Its Place in Pamplona
Fuente Ymbro ran the seventh encierro of the 2006 fiesta, on July 13, in only their second year of participation. The ranch had debuted in 2005. Dennis visited their ranch in southern Spain before the 2008 fiesta.

Cristina Calvo Viñuela won the 2006 official poster competition with her work titled “El encierro,” in the annual competition organized by the Ayuntamiento de Pamplona.
The public vote on the poster was introduced in 2008, so the 2006 poster was among the last selected exclusively by jury.

Beyond the runThe City in 2006
The chupinazo opened the fiesta at noon on Thursday, July 6, 2006, with the traditional rocket fired from the balcony of the Plaza Consistorial. The nine days that followed carried the full program: eight morning encierros, the afternoon corridas at the Plaza de Toros, the nightly fireworks competition, the daily dianas through the streets, and the round-the-clock activity of the peñas. At midnight on July 14, the candlelit Pobre de Mí closed the celebrations, just as Victorino Martín’s bulls had closed the encierros that morning.
The 2006 poster competition, which Cristina Calvo Viñuela won with “El encierro,” was judged under the traditional jury-selection system. The public-vote format introduced in 2008 was still two years away.
