San Fermín 2005: The Running of the Bulls

Looking back at 2005, after Fermín Etxeberria’s death in 2003 and the eight-gored Jandilla morning in 2004, the 2005 fiesta passed without adding either to the record, and that counted for something. The fiesta also brought Fuente Ymbro to Pamplona for the first time, a significant debut, given that ranch’s subsequent history on the course.
The year is also remarkable for Jandilla’s July 11 run, the longest of the fiesta: the two lead bulls reached the corrals in 2:14, but a straggling bull stayed out on the street much longer, and four people were gored. It was a reminder that no two encierros, and no two mornings with the same ganadería, are ever alike.

The 2005 fiesta came after two of the most difficult years in recent encierro history. By the standards of what preceded it, 2005 was a comparatively calm July, no fatalities, and none of the single-morning catastrophes that had defined 2003 and 2004. But it was far from uneventful. The Jandilla run on July 11 was the longest of the fiesta: a straggling bull stayed on the course long after the two lead bulls reached the corrals in 2:14, and four people were gored.

The 2005 fiesta opened with bulls from Santiago Domecq Bohórquez, the ranch whose bulls had taken 11 minutes 57 seconds to reach the corrals in 2002, in a fast, clean run of 2:53.

Gored: 0
Cebada Gago returned to the Pamplona course on July 8, two years to the day after the 2003 run in which Fermín Etxeberria Irañeta was fatally injured. The fast run passed without a horn goring, and one runner was lightly hurt.

Dolores Aguirre
Gored: 4
Dolores Aguirre Ybarra ran the third morning in three minutes, a dangerous run that left four runners gored by horn. Their 2004 appearance had left two runners gored.

The chupinazo opened the 2005 fiesta at noon on Wednesday, July 6, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The nine days of the fiesta included the customary programme of Feria del Toro bullfights in the Plaza de Toros, the encierrillo the evening before each morning’s run, and the peñas, concerts and processions that fill the city through the night.
The fiesta closed at midnight on July 14 with the Pobre de Mí.

The chupinazo opened the 2005 fiesta at noon in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The vallado along the 848.6-metre encierro route was in place.
