I was in Pamplona for San Fermín 2014. The fiesta that year stood out for a few concrete reasons: it was the first year the Esquire Network aired the encierros live in the United States, which brought a new wave of attention from American audiences. The Garcigrande debut on July 10 was one of the more notable mornings of the week, and Jandilla’s return, its first Pamplona encierro since 2010, was welcomed by runners who knew the ranch’s reputation for speed and cohesion.
The gorings were concentrated in the early and late days. Victoriano del Río on July 9, Garcigrande on July 10 and Miura on July 14 produced the most gorings. The days in between were largely clean. That pattern, danger at the edges, calm in the middle, is something I’ve seen in many fiestas. It does not make the quieter mornings safer; it just means the risk moved elsewhere.

In San Fermín 2014, Esquire Network broadcast eight nights of live coverage of the encierros in the United States, the network’s first live television event. At the same time, RTVE introduced a high-definition tirolina camera on Estafeta, riding the street at 60 km/h alongside the herd, giving viewers an entirely new perspective on the speed of the event.
On the route, the fiesta featured three notable firsts and returns: Garcigrande made its Pamplona debut on July 10, and two runners were gored. A fast opener. A 52-year-old Navarrese runner was gored on the Santo Domingo slope, and two other runners were seriously hurt. Dennis Clancey described it as a lightning-fast and straightforward run.

A 23-year-old runner from Nottingham was taken to hospital in a serious condition after the Dolores Aguirre run on July 8, with a chest wound and several broken ribs.
The 2014 Sanfermines Official Cartel

The winning design for 2014 was selected from 546 entries submitted to the public competition. Doménech’s poster shows Saint Fermin at the center of a group including Ernest Hemingway, a bagpipe player, a bull, the Kiliki character Caravinagre, and bullfighter Juan José Padilla, all iconic figures of the fiesta gathered in one composition. The background was a sky blue; the artist chose it over the usual red, white and black.
The title “Equipazo” is an informal Spanish word for a great team. The poster was selected by public vote, with Pamplona citizens choosing it from a final shortlist.

The chupinazo opened the fiesta at noon on Sunday, July 6, 2014, fired from the balcony of the Pamplona town hall by Mikel Martínez, president of the Cruz Roja in Pamplona. The 2014 fiesta marked a significant broadcasting milestone: RTVE introduced a high-definition tirolina camera on Estafeta Street that could travel at 60 km/h.
The Concurso Internacional de Fuegos Artificiales continued its annual schedule in the Ciudadela. On the last night, the fiesta closed at midnight on July 14 with the candlelit Pobre de Mí in the Plaza del Castillo, as it does every year, leaving Pamplona quiet again after nine days of noise.

The Casa de Misericordia confirmed the 2014 lineup: five returning ranches (Miura, Victoriano del Río, Dolores Aguirre, Torrestrella, Fuente Ymbro), plus the debut of Garcigrande and the returns of Jandilla (absent since 2010) and Adolfo Martín (absent since 2003).
6 July 2014
The chupinazo, fired at noon by Mikel Martínez, president of the Cruz Roja in Pamplona, opened the fiesta. The same evening, the encierrillo moved the bulls from the corrales of Gas to the corrales of Santo Domingo in preparation for the first run.
7 July 2014
The first encierro began with Torrestrella. The run was fast; one runner was gored and two others were seriously hurt. This was also the first morning broadcast live on Esquire Network in the United States.
14 July 2014
Miura closed the fiesta with what EFE called the most dangerous run of the week. At midnight, the Pobre de Mí ceremony in the Plaza del Castillo marked the end of San Fermín 2014.
