I returned to Pamplona in 2013 for pickup shots for Chasing Red. It was a supplementary filming year; the main production work had been done in 2012, and I was there to fill in specific footage we still needed from the route and the fiesta. Being back gave me a chance to watch the encierros with a different kind of attention, less as a runner and more through the eye of the camera.
The El Pilar morning on July 12 was the run I remember most clearly from that year. The loose bull and the long time made it one of the more frightening single mornings I’ve observed in Pamplona. Runners were gored, and the run stretched to nearly five minutes. That is not a normal San Fermín morning.

San Fermín 2013 was defined by two episodes that came a day apart. On July 12, the encierro of El Pilar left runners gored, with the bull ‘Burrenote’ separating near the start. The run lasted 4 minutes 57 seconds, the longest of the fiesta.
The following morning, July 13, a side gate to the ring was left open during the Fuente Ymbro run, halving the space, and Toros en Navarra reported at least one runner very seriously hurt in the pile-up. No runner died in 2013. Read every year in the full archive, or compare with 2012 and 2014.

Victoriano del Río beat its own speed record, covering the route in 2 minutes 14 seconds, the fastest run of the fiesta. No horn gorings; three runners were taken to hospital with bruises. The July 10 date also carried the memory of Daniel Jimeno Romero, killed in Pamplona four years earlier on the same date.

Chasing Red
A Film Crew Returns for Pickup Shots
Dennis Clancey returned to Pamplona in 2013 for additional filming for the documentary Chasing Red, which captured the running of the bulls and the culture of the encierro. The 2013 production visit was focused on supplementary footage, adding to material shot during the primary production year of 2012.

Beyond the runThe City in 2013
The chupinazo opened the fiesta on Saturday, July 6, 2013, fired from the balcony of the Pamplona town hall by councillor Eduardo Vall, more than 15 minutes late. The 2013 fiesta saw the return of Torrestrella and Alcurrucén to the encierro lineup after absences, while Juan Pedro Domecq, which had run in 2012, was not in the lineup. Cebada Gago was scheduled for July 9, but its lot was rejected for lack of trapio and Valdefresno ran in its place.
The Concurso Internacional de Fuegos Artificiales continued its annual run in the Ciudadela. The annual fireworks competition lights the Pamplona sky every night of the fiesta, drawing spectators from across Navarra to the old fortress. On the last night of the fiesta, the Pobre de Mí at midnight on July 14 closed the fiesta, as it has every year since the tradition was established.

Before the fiesta
The Casa de Misericordia confirmed the 2013 lineup: Torrestrella and Alcurrucén returned after absences, while Domecq and Torrehandilla stood down. The eight ranches confirmed were Alcurrucén, Dolores Aguirre, Cebada Gago, Victoriano del Río, Torrestrella, El Pilar, Fuente Ymbro, and Miura.
6 July 2013
The chupinazo, fired by councillor Eduardo Vall after a delay of more than 15 minutes, opened the fiesta. The encierros began the following morning at 8:00 a.m. with Alcurrucén as the first ranch of the week.
12 July 2013
El Pilar’s ‘Burrenote’ separated near the start of the sixth encierro, the longest of the fiesta at 4 minutes 57 seconds, and runners were gored.
14 July 2013
Miura closed the fiesta in 2 minutes 16 seconds, goring a 23-year-old Australian woman in the chest. At midnight, the Pobre de Mí ceremony ended San Fermín 2013.
