Looking back at 2001, the year stands as one of the most concentrated periods of danger in the recent history of the encierro.
The lineup that year was formidable. Cebada Gago on the Monday, Santiago Domecq midweek, the Marqués de Domecq ranch, and Miura to close. Jandilla ran with characteristic speed. The fiesta drew the usual international crowd of runners who had come to test themselves against the streets of the old city. The encierro does not change; only the men and bulls do.

Torrestrella
Torrestrella opened the 2001 fiesta on Saturday in a run that left six runners seriously hurt, among them Javier Barrientos, 27, gored in the chest, and Jennifer Smith, 27, of New Jersey, gored in the thigh.

Millares
The Manuel Ángel Millares bulls ran the second encierro in 5:50, and the only serious injury reported was a head trauma.

Jandilla ran the fourth encierro in 2:40, with no incidents reported.

The Santiago Domecq bulls made their encierro debut in a dangerous run. Two stragglers caused tense moments, and five runners were lightly hurt.

Marqués de Domecq
Marqués de Domecq ran the sixth encierro in under two and a half minutes, the fastest and cleanest run of the feria.

Gutiérrez Lorenzo
The Capea bulls ran a hard, exciting penultimate encierro, a dangerous and tense run that left two runners seriously hurt.

Six Seriously Hurt in the Torrestrella Opener
The Torrestrella run on July 7 left six runners seriously hurt. Javier Barrientos, 27, was gored in the chest and Jennifer Smith, 27, of New Jersey, in the thigh.

Jandilla ran the fourth encierro on July 10 in two minutes forty seconds, with no incidents reported.

Two Domecq Ranches on Consecutive Days
In 2001, Santiago Domecq and Marqués de Domecq ran on consecutive days: Santiago Domecq made its encierro debut in a dangerous run, and the Marqués de Domecq run the next morning was the fastest and cleanest of the feria.

Beyond the runThe City in 2001
The chupinazo opened the fiesta at noon on Friday, July 6, as the crowd packed the Plaza Consistorial and the streets of the old city. The nine days that followed brought bullfights, concerts, peñas, giants and the full programme that surrounds the encierro in its traditional form.
San Fermín 2001 drew its customary international crowd. The closing Pobre de Mí at midnight on July 14 marked the end of the fiesta. No runner died.

The chupinazo fired at noon from the town hall balcony in the Plaza Consistorial, opening the nine-day fiesta. The daily 8:00 a.m. encierros began the following morning with Torrestrella.

Cebada Gago ran a dangerous Monday encierro in the rain.
14 July 2001
Miura closed with a very dangerous run that left one runner seriously hurt. No runner died. The Pobre de Mí at midnight ended the fiesta.
