A Tradition Changes: Miura Steps Off the 14th

For the first time in over a decade, Miura did not close the fiesta.

The legendary Miura ranch closed San Fermín on the final morning of July 14 every year from 2013 through 2025. In 2026 that changed: Miura ran on Monday, July 13, and Jandilla took the closing run on the 14th.

For runners who track the fiesta, it was a real change in a long-standing rhythm.

The Centenary of The Sun Also Rises

2026 marks one hundred years since Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises in 1926, the novel that carried Pamplona and the running of the bulls to the world.

A number of the Hemingway family have come through Pamplona over the years. John Hemingway, the grandson, has been the most prominent, a good friend, and we co-authored a book together. His son Michael Hemingway came and spent time as a photographer during fiesta, and used to stay at my apartment near Hotel Catedral.

“La Cuadrilla” Wins the 2026 Cartel

The official 2026 poster is “La Cuadrilla” by Pamplona artist Marta Garatea Almagro, a choral image that packs the whole fiesta into one scene. It won the public vote with record turnout of 10,712 valid votes, the most since the contest began, across ten finalists.

What Else Is New in 2026

I’ve heard a ton about the Paseo de Sarasate works, and from people in town it’s clear it won’t be finished for this fiesta, so it’s something we’ll work around. There was already some construction there during the 2025 fiesta. Hopefully it’s done by summer 2027.

Update, October 2026: the Paseo de Sarasate works are still ongoing.

Heat. On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Pamplona reached 41.4 °C (106.5 °F) (Diario de Navarra, July 15, 2026). elDiario.es called 2026 the hottest Sanfermines on record, with an average maximum of 39.2 °C over the fiesta.

Also for 2026:

vallado

(route fence) went up starting June 1; the chupinazo was entrusted to Navarra’s emergency-medicine service; the Zona Joven was set in Plaza de los Fueros; and the folklore programming shifted to Plaza de San José.

What Changed on the Route in 2026

The Ayuntamiento moved the time to enter the route from 7:15 to 7:30, with access exclusively through Plaza Consistorial, and prohibited runners who enter the bullring before the bulls arrive from staying in the ruedo (Ayuntamiento de Pamplona, May 29, 2026).

“This year we saw an official change to route entry. All participants needed to be on the route by 7:30. Even with the 15-minute delay, it was difficult for some runners to enter the route right before 7:30. In particular, on the 8th, there were a number of runners turned away.”

“One of the nice improvements this year: we have always talked about the valientes, the valiant ones. It is a joke for people who locals see as cowards, people who run into the bullring well before the bulls arrive. The city has started forcing those people off the route as soon as they enter the bullring. This is a benefit, because you end up with fewer people crowding the Plaza de Toros with no intention of actually running.”

San Fermín 2026: Who Was Injured in the Encierros

“According to the Navarra Health Department’s figures, 71 people were injured during the running of the bulls across the eight runs. Sixty were treated at the hospital and eleven by an outside emergency service. That was 26 more injuries than in 2025.”

“Of the 60 treated at the hospital, six were horn wounds and 54 were traumatic injuries.”

“Nine people were admitted to the hospital: two to the ICU and five to the general ward. One was discharged by the end of the fiesta and one was transferred to another hospital. Another person was kept under observation through the end of the fiesta.”

“Cruz Roja reported providing first aid to 359 participants in the encierros. It also provided first aid at the Suelta de Vaquillas, attending to 166 injured.”

“Injuries are reported after every run, and the results are tabulated at the end of the fiesta.”
